About Caroline

As a watercolor artist, Caroline works with a limited palette of reds, blues, yellows, and other cool and warm hues. She also uses hot-pressed paper so that the color will remain strong and vivid on the surface of the material.

Caroline is a signature member of the New England Watercolor Society in Boston, MA, the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society, the Red River Watercolor Society in Fargo, ND, and the Catharine Lorillard Wolf Art Club in New York, NY.

Achievements and Recognition

Caroline has been published in Splash 5 and a number of magazines, including the Summer 1996 and Spring 2000 issues of Watercolor magazine. Much of her watercolor artwork and other paintings are in a number of collections, including the Taube Museum of Art in Minot, ND, the Minot State University in Minot, ND, and the Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, MA. Her painting "To Life" even appears in the book Splash 5: The Glory of Color. She was also selected as the 2005 Artist of the Year and featured on the 2005 and 2009 calendars produced by Quality Printing Service in Bismarck, ND.

Her Story

Family Background and Early Life

Caroline's parents, a mother from the East Coast and a father from the West Coast, met in the military service. Born in Virginia, Caroline was the eldest of four children and grew up in a large family of his, hers, and theirs. She experienced living on both coasts and traveling across the country many times.

The Artistic Beginnings of a Watercolor Artist

Growing up, Caroline knew she had a wonderful artistic gift. Creativity was in her blood. Her mother and her grandmother were both artists. Her mother even taught her perspective drawing when she was 4 years old, as a way of amusing and playing with her. When she got her first camera at 11 years old, her father, who had once worked with the photography department in the Air Force, taught her the fundamentals of composition. Truly, art was a part of her life. She immensely enjoyed mathematics and art in school. Her art excelled for her age, and her classmates were constantly encouraged to strive for a similar caliber to hers in their artistic attempts. However, finances did not allow or encourage her to continue her schooling.

Her Military Journey

Caroline joined the United States Army for a three-year tour, where she experienced real personal growth and gained confidence in her own abilities and worth. Her time in the Army enabled her to travel to the Southern United States and Thailand. She enjoyed the people and their cultures, making many friends. During this time, she did numerous pastel portraits and other surrealistic pieces.

Pursuing Higher Education and Art

After completing her tour of duty, Caroline studied fine art at Rivier College in Nashua, NH. She then met her husband, Dave. Together, they bought a house. For the next 10 years, Caroline worked with computers and customer service duties, with no time to pursue artistic endeavors.
Dave encouraged Caroline to explore being a watercolor artist and, later, to paint florals. With time and experimentation, she perfected her technique, craft, and working habits to obtain results that complement her own personality. Her watercolor artwork soon gained awards and recognition.

Supporting Each Other's Craft as a Couple

With Dave's strong encouragement and support in her artistic efforts, Caroline found it easy to support him back as he and his partner undertook establishing Samsara Cues, a business specializing in making custom billiard cues. Dave was an artist in his own right and the master cue maker behind Samsara Cues. He has recently retired. In November 2000, Samsara Cues relocated to Rugby, ND, and with it, so did Caroline and Dave. The city welcomed them and made them feel at home.
